ON PROCESS

Film Fabrik is fascinating as a collective. For 2011, five original short films are being shot in a month. Each film is given three production days for set construction, actor rehearsal, lighting, sound, camera set-up, shooting. With such speedy turnaround and with the variety in scripts, it takes a professional, responsible, driven, flexible, gifted, and passionate team to commit to actualizing each film. Close to thirty film professionals, multidisciplinary artists, and catering volunteers have gathered to share skills from their own areas of expertise but also to contribute in a myriad of ways that extend beyond their areas of focus.

This collective succeeds because of the team’s ensemble attitude; any sign of ego would cause tension that could impact the efficiency required to make this possible. At all times, group members are working. If they do not have an urgent task, they volunteer in the kitchen, seek to help wherever it’s needed, or take initiative to document the overall process via video or photos.

The quality of work produced is also impressive, and speaks volumes to the talent and dedication of each collective member. That the collective has existed for ten years now (working through three creative laboratories to produce 14 short films and one full-length documentary during this time) is also a testament to everyone’s enthusiasm for the Film Fabrik project.

How deeply inspiring it is to witness people from such varied backgrounds, countries, and interests sharing an obvious love for their work, enjoyment of each other, and adrenaline rush from interacting with foreigners to succeed at collective creation.
