FILM FABRIK PRAHA: DAY TEN

Film Fabrik commences shooting for PH's film Strain.

The morning shooting schedule is rapidly revised due to rain, so outdoor shots are shifted to later in the day. The crew displays consummate efficiency throughout the day, moving with expediency from shot to shot. Rafael, Erpur, and Andrea set up lights. Florent puts on a clinic in professionalism as the assistant director. Starki works magic with continuity. Armande is focused and relaxed as the cameraperson. Veronika and Petra shift props and dress sets. Agnar assists with set and tech. Sam does what soundpeople do best: record. Leoma claps the clapper. angela handles make-up and wardrobe. Marion, Andrea, and Matěj shine in their acting roles. And PH puts his dancing on hold to direct the film.

Lunch is pasta fagiole and leftover dahl. As the break winds down, Agnar tells a long children's story about a tomato, a banana, and two corn brothers that includes some fast-action origami to accompany his narrative. The crew is rapt.

Strain has more dialogue and character interaction than our previous film, as well as different sets within the same location. These considerations add to the length of shot preparation, though overall the shots themselves are completed quickly, with no more than five takes per shot.

In the afternoon, Sam's family arrives from Bavaria to watch the shoot's activities. Shortly after, Veronika's family arrives. The crew continues without losing focus, while all onlookers fill the space with beautiful enthusiasm.

By 17:00, the rain has ceased and we move outside. A graffiti-covered brick wall is layered with concert flyers announcing "Anya and the blonds," the band featured in PH's film. As we shoot, Leoma, Matěj, and angela pass the time by choreographing dances with their faces. Near the end, PH receives an offer of passersby to film their awesome dance moves, but he politely declines.

We return inside, and film Andrea's in-apartment concert. She's given the direction of PH to sing "sexually" as her mom and grandma spectate. All available crew with a tobacco habit are instructed to lay at Andrea's feet and chain-smoke to create billows of smoke in the orange lights. A memory is made as all crew delight in the cozy, crazy situation.

Dinner is pasta and bean salad, followed by a wonderful caramel cake. Post-dinner, we return to Marion's in-apartment concert scene. Petra and Veronika light a pathway of candles through which Armande and Diddi roll the camera (assisted by Erpur's push). angela gives Marion a Courtney Love makeover. It's a striking scene.
